A. — LING. Dixième lettre des alphabets phénicien et hébreu, correspondant au Y, y français. Quand (...) les Grecs empruntèrent aux Phéniciens leur alphabet, le signe de la consonne sémitique yod demeurait disponible et servit à fournir une notation de voyelle i (M. LEJEUNE, Traité de phonét. gr., 1955, p. 140).
B. — PHONÉT. Semi-consonne constrictive dorso-palatale sonore, transcrite [j] dans l'alphabet phonétique international et i, y ou ille en français (d'apr. MOUNIN 1974).
